Department of Pharmacy
You are very welcome to the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science.
It is an exciting time for the profession of pharmacy and many changes have occurred over the past few years. The role of the pharmacist is very different today from what it was several years ago, with many pharmacists becoming more fully engaged in providing healthcare to patients in both the hospital and community sectors. It is a challenging and rewarding role and one that gains the respect of other healthcare professionals.
It is also exciting times for us at Ulster. To enable you to work as a pharmacist in today’s health service, you need an education that is modern and innovative. At the Ulster (Coleraine), you can be confident of learning in contemporary and state-of-the-art facilities. You will learn the basic sciences that underpin the development of medicines and also gain the clinical knowledge that will allow you to dispense, and possibly prescribe, these medicines in the future.
We have established close links with the excellent pharmaceutical services that surround the University, such as those in neighbouring community pharmacies and the local pharmaceutical industries. With regard to hospital pharmacy, we are part of the clinical pharmacy teacher practitioner network and have forged a very good relationship with the surrounding Health and Social Care Trusts. As a student in the department, we will ensure you experience all that pharmacy has to offer as you begin your studies with us.
We had our first intake of students in September 2009 and have recently admitted our 2010 cohort. It is a small and sociable department with about 35 students in each year. So, you can be confident of a friendly welcome and that you will receive the time and attention you need from staff so you can achieve your full potential. We are currently half way through the accreditation process as required by the two pharmaceutical regulators in the UK (The General Pharmaceutical Council and the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland). Full accreditation is granted once all four years of the MPharm are complete. So, you will emerge with an MPharm degree that will allow you to register as a pharmacist once you have met the Society’s preregistration requirements.
We have put together some useful information and links, which will tell you more about the course and the role of today’s pharmacist. Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries about our new MPharm. We will be delighted to hear from you.
